Welcome back travelers and hello again to all of you who stayed in Sun City Grand. While the weather is cooling, our Language Club classes are heating up and ready to go. Check the Language Club website for the fall schedule, as well as, the registration form for renewing your 2010 membership. Your $15 dues allow you to take as many classes as you wish. Most of our classes, teachers, and times remain the same. We are very sorry not to be able to offer an American Sign Language class this fall. Although the Deaf Group is still part of the Language Club, at this time we have no teachers for the ASL class. Walter Werra and Vicki Meyer were marvelous teachers for the past several years and we will miss their dedication in teaching the ASL classes.
Kurt von Allmen, French teacher, and Fred Linch, director of Cinematheque de Langlois, and an experienced film critic and teacher for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at SCG have selected a wide variety of foreign films for the Language Club’s Foreign Film Festival. Fred, who has served as a film festival judge throughout the US and internationally, will be preparing e-note previews before each film showing to help broaden our understanding of the films. Six films will be shown each Monday evening for 6 weeks (skip Oct. 19) , at 6 p.m., beginning Oct. 12, with an Italian film, “Starmaker”, scheduled first. The films are free and open to all SCG residents. Check our website for the language film to be shown and the exact date and place.
Our nominating committee, Nancy Alcock, Shirley Boots, and Sandra Oehler, will be accepting names of people who would like to be Language Club officers—no experience required!! Let me, or, one of the committee members, know of your interest before the Oct. 8 Board meeting, which will be the required CAM time before the Language Club General Membership Meeting and election, Nov. 19. Mark your calendar for those important dates to elect new officers and be a part of the planning for Language Club events.
I am looking forward to a great fall season with Language Club activities. If you want to help out with our Octoberfest table, Saturday, October 10, let me know. You can help spread the word about the challenge and fun of learning A New Language A New World!
